“She died during the night during her sleep,” agent Marieke Verharen of Features Creative Management told AFP of the 60 year-old actress who had been admitted to an Amsterdam hospital in July following a stroke.

A series of sequels followed, also starring Kristel, with “Emmanuelle 2″ in 1975, “Goodbye Emmanuelle” in 1977 and “Emmanuelle 4″ in 1984.
She soon became typecast in erotic roles, and admitted to taking acting jobs in the 1980s simply to make money to feed her expensive cocaine habit.

“I was a silent actress, a body. I belonged to dreams, to those that can’t be broken,” Kristel, who for years battled drug and alcohol addiction, wrote in her 2006 autobiography “Naked”.

Kristel was born on September 28, 1952 in Utrecht, where her parents ran a hotel near the train station. She relates in her autobiography how she was sexually abused at age nine by the hotel’s manager.

Her parents sent her to a religious boarding school age 11 where she was described as a gifted pupil. But when she was 17 she turned to a career in modelling, winning the Miss TV Europe competition in 1973.

Following that success, French director Just Jaeckin chose her to play the title role in “Emmanuelle”, which would become one of the biggest French box office successes ever.

Jaeckin told AFP in Paris that Kristel was “a wonderful woman, very pure, very innocent. But the mark that Emmanuelle left on her was very hard for her.”

“Unfortunately, I was expecting it,” Jaeckin said of her death. “I’m also relieved that she no longer has to suffer.”

Dutch film director Frans Weisz lamented Kristel’s death on national television, but added: “Sylvia and happiness for me was always an odd combination.”

She played in several non-erotic films but was then forced to act in “Emmanuelle” sequences because of contractual obligations.

Kristel is survived by a son, Arthur, who she had in 1975 with her then-husband Belgian author Hugo Claus, a man 24 years her senior whom she described as a “father lover”.

Claus was “the father that I would have liked to have had and the lover that I had dreamt of.”

Kristel turned to painting in her later life, an activity she said was therapeutic, Dutch media quoting her as saying: “Self confidence for me is a fragile fleece.”

In one of her last interviews broadcast on Dutch national television she said that although she had left her alcohol abuse behind her, she would “not say no to a glass of good champagne.”

She was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 2002 and underwent a number of chemotherapy treatments, it was reported.

Agent Verharen declined to say whether the world’s most famous Dutch actress died at home or at hospital. The funeral will be private, she said.
Kristel had a stroke following treatment for throat cancer. She was also suffering from liver cancer.

“I don’t expect much from the afterlife, I think that I know very well what pain is,” Kristel said in a 2005 interview with Dutch newspaper Volkskrant.

“When I think of the end of my life, I think mainly: I didn’t do nothing, but I could have done more.”

“The agent requested all seven occupants out of the bus and conducted an inspection of the vehicle,” said Rusty Fleming, of the local sheriff’s office, who added that a dog was used to sniff out the drugs.

The triple headstone was removed from Woodlands Cemetery overnight to avoid a “circus” and will now be destroyed, funeral director Robert Morphet said.

Cleveland Police has confirmed it has received a new complaint from a man in Redcar relating to “a historic allegation of sexual assault” against Savile.

The incident is alleged to have taken place in the early 1970s when the man was nine years old.

Mr Morphet, from Joseph A Hey and Son, said Savile’s family had made the decision to remove the gravestone because of “the impact the stone remaining there could have on the dignity and sanctity of the cemetery”.

Initially the stone was due to be removed on Wednesday morning.

Mr Morphet, who organised Savile’s funeral and oversaw the dismantling of the headstone, said: “We felt the most dignified way to do it would be discreetly, quietly and while it was dark. It took us about an hour-and-a-half to take the stone down and take it away.”

He said it was removed in three pieces and taken away on a lorry.

“We felt that it was the appropriate thing to do and in the event I think we’ve made the right decision,” Mr Morphet said.

The headstone, which was inscribed with the epitaph “It Was Good While It Lasted” and verses composed by a family friend, will now be destroyed.

“We’ve taken it back to our yard in Leeds. We’ll grind the inscription off and we will dispose of the memorial. It’ll be broken up and just go to landfill,” Mr Morphet said.

Savile had a long association with Scarborough and was buried there after his death, aged 84, in October 2011.

The Jim’ll Fix It and Top Of The Pops presenter was buried in a gold coffin at a 45-degree angle at the cemetery, facing the sea, at his own request.

The coffin was later encased in concrete as a “security measure” amid speculation about its contents.

‘Horrific accounts’

The grave, which overlooks the sea, would remain unmarked for the moment, Mr Morphet added.

“When we erected his headstone not three weeks ago I expected it to be here forever. I never thought it’d be removed, let alone so quickly.

“Once the outcome of the investigation has taken place then I guess Savile’s family will sit down and think about what is the appropriate memorial, if any at all,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police said it was pursuing 120 separate lines of inquiry after recording eight allegations against the Leeds-born entertainer, including two accusations of rape.

The police investigation follows claims made about the BBC broadcaster in an ITV documentary last week.

Mark Williams Thomas, a former child protection expert who presented the programme, told the BBC a number of women had contacted him since the programme was broadcast.

“I have had a significant number that have come direct to me and are on top of the numbers the police have spoken about.

“That is both people who have given me information about Jimmy Savile over the last 50 years as well as victims who have given me horrific accounts of their abuse,” he said.

BBC Director General George Entwistle has promised a “comprehensive examination” of the allegations concerning Savile’s time at the corporation.

‘Great sadness’

The removal of the headstone comes days after a footpath sign in Scarborough commemorating Savile was taken down by the borough council.

A plaque outside his flat in Scarborough was also removed last week after the words “rapist” and “paedophile” were written on it.

David Jeffels, chairman of the Sir Jimmy Savile Memorial Steering Group, which was established in Scarborough after his death, said: “There has been great sadness and almost disbelief in Scarborough that this could have happened.

“Genuinely I don’t think anyone on the committee had any idea that these allegations were going to be made or that they existed but I fully accept that so many women have come forward it must be a case of there being ‘no smoke without fire’ I am afraid.”

Leeds City Council has taken Savile’s name off an inscription on a wall commemorating high profile citizens at the city’s Civic Hall.

Even though it only peaked at number 17 on the British charts, “Love Me Do” was not only the group’s first record but also their first hit.

“It’s obviously the first single, but more importantly, it established their policy of only releasing songs that were written by the Beatles themselves,” said Hamish MacBain, assistant editor at British music magazine NME.

“The fashion at that time was not for big groups to write their own material, so the Beatles were being quite radical in that sense by issuing a single that they had written themselves,” MacBain told AFP.

“Love Me Do” was recorded in September 1962, though the so-called “fifth Beatle”, producer George Martin, pushed for the release of another song, penned by British singer Adam Faith but performed by the Fab Four.

But the Beatles got their way, and “Love Me Do”, written like so many of their succeeding hits by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, went on sale on October 5, 1962.

The group’s insistence that their singles at least should be all their own work “established a trend that lasted obviously their entire career and became the norm for big groups that became rock bands”, MacBain said.

“You were not considered a serious rock band by the mid-60s unless you were writing your own material.”

The catchy lyrics and recognisable harmonies of “Love Me Do” were recorded at London’s Abbey Road studios, later made famous by the group as the title of one of their LPs.

Although it kick-started their career and became a British hit, “Love Me Do” did not spark Beatlemania, said Simon Zagorski-Thomas, a reader in music at University of West London’s college of music.

“‘Love Me Do’ was an interesting song, but it wasn’t the thing that really launched their career,” he told AFP.

Instead, it was the group’s 1964 appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in the United States that made the Beatles a phenomenon distinct from all previous British bands and launched them globally.

“Love Me Do” is not considered by most observers to be among the Beatles’ masterpieces, MacBain said.

“In terms of songwriting it’s pretty basic, and it’s certainly not as good as the stuff they were coming out with a few months later.”

“P.S. I Love You” was recorded on the B-side of the track, and both songs were featured on the group’s first album “Please Please Me”, named after their second hit single, which was released in March 1963 and included songs they had not written.

BBC Four TV will air a documentary on Sunday about “Love Me Do,” with an eyewitness account claiming that the group’s manager Brian Epstein bought 10,000 copies of the single to boost sales.

While the rumour has never been proved, Epstein’s friend and business associate, Joe Flannery, claims in the documentary that the copies were purchased.

Remastered versions of The Beatles’ studio albums will be released on vinyl on November 13 in North America.

Taken 2 bucks this trend. Olivier Megaton’s wan and weedy follow-up to Pierre Morel’s muscularly unpleasant 2008 thriller feels like such a swindle that the original film’s sizeable fanbase may well end up subtitling it “The Cleaners”.

Once again, disaster strikes when an American family decides to holiday in Europe. In the first film, the teenage daughter of CIA agent Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) was abducted by sex traffickers almost as soon as she left the baggage hall at Charles de Gaulle Airport. This time, during a reconciliatory trip to Istanbul, Bryan and his ex-wife Lenore (Famke Janssen) are kidnapped by some Albanians related to the oodles of pimps Bryan slaughtered in Paris four years ago.

And so it falls to daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) to rescue her parents – or at least it does for about 10 minutes, until Bryan escapes from his cell and starts hunting down his abductors one by one.

Neeson, who brought a cheerfully absurd gravitas to his role in the first film, is denied any showpiece speeches, and Megaton, whose real name is Fontana, edits action sequences by seemingly tossing his raw footage into a food processor.

We are also treated to one of the most anticlimactic final fights in recent memory: in a crumbling bathhouse, Neeson faces off against an overweight Albanian in a purple shell suit. He looks less like the chief henchman than the man the chief henchman might hire to Tarmac his driveway.

In the end, the door is left open for a Taken 3, although you do rather wish the Mills family would just throw away their passports.

The alleged victims, who have never spoken before, came forward after a deluge of claims that the entertainer molested under-age girls at the height of his fame.

The new claims came as a woman was due to go to police today about being sexually abused in Savile’s dressing room by another TV presenter as singer Gary Glitter allegedly performed a sex act on a young girl nearby.

Karin Ward said she will make a complaint to the Met against the unnamed celebrity at the BBC over the alleged assault when she was 14. She initially told her story to BBC reporters for a Newsnight investigation into Savile, which was never screened.

In an ITV documentary tonight, she says: “I told Newsnight that I saw Gary Glitter have sex with a girl in Jimmy Savile’s dressing room … in that little alcove bit. I didn’t see it completely but that’s what was going on and nobody batted an eyelid. I also told them that I was horribly, horribly humiliated.”

She said she also saw Savile abusing another girl in the same room.

The Standard first revealed on Friday that up to 10 women have told ITV they were sexually abused by the former Jim’ll Fix It and Top Of The Pops star when they were young girls.

Ex-detective Mark William-Thomas, who is presenting tonight’s documentary Exposure: The Other Side Of Jimmy Savile, said: “Up to eight women have come forward for the first time to tell me their stories over the last few days.

“I have urged them to go to the police. It is quite clear from this early response that there are lots more women out there with similar stories to tell.”

Five women are expected to tell their stories on the programme tonight.

Today it also emerged that at least four police forces investigated claims that Savile molested children, while Scotland Yard is looking into an allegation of rape dating back to 1986.

The BBC last night announced it is launching an internal inquiry into the complaints and working with police.

There were online calls today for Savile to be stripped of his knighthood.
