The ranking brings BBC iPlayer into the top three for the first time, while Marks and Spencer has fallen from third to fourth place since the last YouGov BrandIndex league table in January.

The table follows M&S reporting its worst trading performance for three years on Tuesday, with a 6.8% fall in non-food like-for-like sales in the 13 weeks to June 30.

The table of more than 850 brands attempts to measure changes in consumer perception by assessing quality, value, customer satisfaction, corporate reputation, general impression and the likelihood that customers will recommend the brand.

It is the first time that Amazon has overtaken Google to hold the top spot.

The BBC brand overall secured fifth place, “further underpinning its status as one of the UK’s masterbrands”, YouGov said.

Other newcomers to the top 20 alongside BBC iPlayer include Samsung (13), Freeview (14) and Dyson (18) at the expense of Dove, Walkers, Panasonic and Thorntons.

YouGov BrandIndex associate director Sarah Murphy said: “BBC iPlayer overtaking M&S in the top three demonstrates the great amount that the broadcaster has delivered in the last year, whilst dealing with reduced funding – a great achievement.

“Despite M&S falling out of the top three, they still have shown great resilience in a sector which has experienced significant declines over the last year.”
