During a live performance at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, Tosh became involved in a verbal altercation with a member of the audience over a “rape” joke. Though he apologized for joking about such a sensitive subject, people have sounded off about disdain over the comments on Tumblr, for example.
Laugh Factory’s owner, Jamie Masada, claims that Tosh inquired of the audience as to what they wanted him to discuss. An audience member allegedly called out “rape” and Tosh continued his routine. A woman who attended the show was immediately offended by the crass humor and publicly voiced her anger. Tosh reciprocated by allegedly saying “well it looks like she was raped by 5 guys…”
Masada stated that Tosh wasn’t making a joke about the offended woman, he simply responded to the person who yelled out “rape” as a suggested subject matter for his routine.
Daniel Tosh is no stranger to controversy as a result of his humor style. He appears frequently on Comedy Central and travels worldwide performing for audiences who don’t necessarily find his humor that offensive.
His Twitter response to the allegations yesterday read: “all the out of context misquotes aside, i’d like to sincerely apologize.”
