Elton John put his health troubles to one side this week, to attend a celebration at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre to commemorate 3,000 performances of Billy Elliot, the musical. The musician, 65, was hospitalized earlier this month with an infection, but looked fighting fit as he joined the cast and crew of the show on-stage.

Elton wrote the music for the production, which is based on the 2000 film of the same name, about a working class boy from the North of England who wins a place at the Royal Ballet School in London. During its impressive run, Billy Elliot has been nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards, winning four. Elton was also joined at the Theatre by several young actors who have played the lead role, and after presenting them with a cake, proceeded to dunk their heads into the sponge! It’s the first public outing for Elton since he was admitted to the Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles last week with what was described as a “serious respiratory infection”.

He was reluctantly forced to cancel four concerts from his Million Dollar Piano residency in Las Vegas, with doctors urging a “complete rest” period, as well as antibiotic treatment. He is expected to perform in the UK capital for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations this weekend.
