Respected Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the 20-year-old was at the wheel of a car in Madrid that hit a wall, causing the death of one of the vehicle’s passengers, a young woman who suffered serious brain injuries.
The player suffered light injuries in the accident while the three other passengers in the car are reported to have suffered serious injuries.
Alonso is reported to have failed one blood-alcohol level test and then refused to take a second test because he was suffering from an anxiety attack.
Alonso was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.45, above the legal limit of 0.25 and could now be accused of negligent homicide.
The young full-back was signed from Real Madrid in the summer on a three-year-deal.
He has struggled to make an impact in the Bolton first-team though, starting just four Premier League games this season.
