The new Samsung Galaxy Note is expected to have a 5.5-inch display, a faster processor and an improved camera.
“We plan to unveil the next Galaxy Note at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event in Berlin on August 29,” a Samsung spokesman said. Samsung’s event will take place two days before the beginning of IFA, Europe’s largest consumer electronics fair, which is also held in Berlin.
Released in October last year, the Samsung Galaxy Note offered a significantly larger screen than a typical smartphone – 5.3 inches – as well as a stylus for note-taking. Reviews were mixed but in June Samsung said it had shipped seven million Galaxy Notes.
Earlier this year Samsung ended Nokia’s 14-year reign as the top global handset maker and last month the company reported record operating profits, boosted in part by the success of the Galaxy S3 handset.
The company is locked in a global patent battle with rival Apple. The iPhone-maker has challenged Samsung in court in Australia, Germany and Britain and this week the two companies began a trial in California.
Samsung is expected to announce a new version of the Galaxy Note smartphone later this month.
Apple is seeking $2.5 billion in damages as well as injunctions against some of Samsung’s tablets and smartphones. Samsung, in retaliation, is demanding royalty payments for patents it owns.
The trial is expected to last for at least another three weeks.
